Guest Post: Tips for Summer Budgeting and Money Management

by Dena | Print the article | Jul 9

Summer spending can quickly become out-of-control and serve as an enormous stressor for you and our family. If one can manage their spending throughout the summer, they will keep stress to a minimum as well as keeping their bank account in the black. By following a few simple suggestions, summer spending can keep under control. First, use cash instead of debit cards. Second, hold family budget meetings frequently. Third, create a family vacation fund where everyone can contribute to next year’s summer vacation.

Use cash instead of debit cards
When possible, try to use cash this summer instead of your debit card because you will be able to keep track of your spending better. When using a debit card, one does not get a grasp of how much they are spending until their balance is at zero or beyond. This is an easy way to budget as well because one can simply take with them their budgeted amount and stop spending when they run out of money.

Hold frequent family budget meetings
Summer is a high-spending time. Kids are out of school and on the go, families are on vacation spending money. This behavior may be out of the norm for most people because the remainder of the year is spent concentrating on school and spending is typically routine. That being said, it is important that you and your spouse get together more frequently throughout the summer months to ensure that the spending is not out of control and also to ensure that all the bills are paid with the additional spending taking place.

Take reasonable trips not elaborate trips
Keeping the family busy over the summer months can be a chore, but if you pursue vacations that are reasonable, it is possible to take a few fun vacations as opposed to one expensive vacation. Spending on an expensive vacations often requires the typical family to resort to credit card use. Credit cards are easily usable but are a lot harder to pay off. The interest fees compound quickly and before you know it you are no longer paying off the vacation, but you are now paying off twice as much. Invest in small road trips and keep the vacation costs down.

Create a family vacation fund
Allowing the entire family to contribute to next summer’s vacation is a great way to get everyone to appreciate the vacation instead of taking it for granted. Invite the family, including kids, to consistently donate spare change to the fund throughout the year. Before you know it, the fund will be growing and the family may be able to go on a trip that they never imagined they could go to.

By following the above suggestions, one can easily keep the summer spending habits in check as well as keeping the budget under control. Simply use cash as opposed to debit cards, whenever possible. Meet with family members to have a budget meeting on a regular basis. Ask the family to contribute to a vacation fund. These few suggestions will get you on your way to a stress-free summer. You will be able to enjoy the hot summer sun by the beach without spending a minute worried about your bank account. Using cash will help you keep track of how much you are spending.
