Guest Post: 5 Ways to Plan a Great Party on a Budget

by Dena | Print the article | Jul 26

Let’s face it – as a single mom, your budget is always a cause for concern. Kids’ parties are not always the most budget-friendly things out there, but you want your kids to be able to feel special on their most important day. So what is a busy, cash-strapped mom to do? If you plan carefully, birthday parties do not have to break the bank. Planning a party on a budget requires some creativity, but it is certainly possible.

The first step is food. If possible, planning a party at a time that does not coincide with a meal is best. This way you do not have to serve a bunch of hungry kids a full meal. You can simply have some yummy snacks and your cake and ice cream and let them have fun without the hassle of a meal. Consider foods that you can stockpile long before the party or buy with coupons. For instance, if your child has a favorite type of chips or cracker, stock up on those before the party month.

Activities are necessary at a birthday party to keep the kids entertained and out of mischief, but you do not have to buy expensive party paraphernalia to accomplish this. Rather, consider making your activities. Go online to find games that go along with your theme that you can make yourself. If all else fails, a simple game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey or even tag if you have an outdoor space is fun and fills time.

Postage is expensive, so consider hand delivering your invitations, if you can do so without leaving some kids feeling left out. Another option is to use an e-vite invitation. Technically this is not good etiquette, but kids won’t care! They will just be glad to receive an invitation to a fun party!

If you have a dollar store in your area, do not buy a single party favor or decoration until you stop there. Some have entire party sections with plates, napkins, and everything else you need, and none of it costs more than $1.

Finally, set your budget, and stick to it. You may have to limit the number of friends your kid can invite when planning a party on a budget, but they will still have a blast. And you may be able to do an entire party on less than $50.
