Guest Post: Mr. Food – Apple Crunch Cobbler

Chunky Applesauce

The end of summer can always be a little bittersweet: putting away shorts and tank tops, saying goodbye to beach towels and outdoor chairs, adjusting to the cooler evening temperatures. But there’s one thing that always puts me in the mood for fall, and that’s apple recipes! Fresh apples are one of the best parts about autumn, and I love to use them in everything from oatmeal and soup to tarts and baked chicken. The possibilities are endless when it comes to easy, delicious apple recipes; it’s a fabulous way to enjoy the fall flavors, whether you’re partial to Red Delicious, Gala, Braeburn or Granny Smith varieties.

I look forward to apple-picking season, which usually begins in early September and can last through November. No matter how many bags of apples I bring home, I don’t feel rushed to use them all right away – apples keep well in the fridge for up to three weeks. And even though it’s hard to see summer end, apples tend to be most expensive in summer, so it can get pretty pricey making all my favorite apple recipes during the warmer months. The cost of apples is cheapest in autumn, and become gradually more expensive throughout the rest of the year. So take your “apple a day” to new heights this fall, starting with my favorite autumn dessert: Apple Crunch Cobbler from!

This slow cooker dessert recipe showcases the tart, sweet apples in combination with a crunchy, doctored-up granola. It’s best served over warm vanilla ice cream, and makes a super end to any meal. Best of all, slow cookers do the work for you! You’ll have an amazing dessert that tastes like you spent all day in the kitchen, but you save time and energy by using your slow cooker. Usually stews, roasts and chilis come to mind when people think slow cooker recipes, but desserts can be done divinely in a slow cooker – all without using your oven. For a fantastic fall recipe this year, don’t miss Apple Crunch Cobbler and all of the apple recipes on Mr. Food!
